The 2026 Ballon d'Or winner will be announced at the London Palladium in less than a day. The prize, considered football's most prestigious individual honor, has narrowed to a three-way race between Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane.

Bookmakers have placed Kane as the heavy favorite. They assign him a 70 percent chance of winning the award for the 2025-26 season. This contrasts sharply with projections from Avisia, a French data analysis firm. Avisia rates the Barcelona winger Yamal as the top contender at 23 percent. Kane follows at 21 percent, with Mbappe third at 19 percent. Rodri, the 2024 winner, also sits at 19 percent, and Lionel Messi is fifth at 18 percent.

Yamal, the 19-year-old Spain international, leads the discussion on trophies. He won the World Cup and La Liga this year. Although injury limited his personal statistics, his team success aligns with historical trends for the award. Only four of the previous 19 winners failed to claim a major title such as the Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America. A win for Yamal would break the age record, surpassing Brazil's Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997.

Mbappe presents a statistical challenge with his own record. He led La Liga with 25 goals and the Champions League with 15. He also set a World Cup record with 12 goals and won the Golden Boot. However, he did not win a major team trophy with Real Madrid or France. Kane's case rests on his 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Messi scored 82 in 2011-12. Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but finished third with England at the World Cup.

Public opinion among players is divided. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone supports Messi, noting the veteran's performance after the World Cup. Jude Bellingham backs Kane, citing his work ethic, while Anthony Gordon favors Yamal. Mbappe has the backing of Real Madrid teammate Aurelien Tchouameni, who called his season incredible.

The ceremony will settle the debate between raw numbers, team success, and betting odds. The three finalists have all campaigned for the prize in different ways, with Yamal and Mbappe speaking publicly about their own merits while Kane has remained more reserved.
